What I am trying to describe is thermodynamic reality. Fancy maneuvers with money can conceal a situation for a little while, and perhaps pull consumption forward, but money does not create any wealth when the thermodynamic surplus is simply not there. Think about the difference in BW Hill’s graphs between the affordable price and the cost of production. When the affordable price falls below the cost of production, there is no thermodynamic surplus to be spent. No amount of financial shenanigans can change that. No amount of hand-wringing and saying ‘but we really need it’ is going to do any good.
