The death of the fossil fuel industrie
"One of the best—maybe THE best article I’ve read on this subject.
Sobering and truly scary. I have grandchildren who will see 2100. I will not, but I weep for them, both in sadness and anger.
I burned the same fuels in growing my family as they are burning growing theirs. They too think it is forever, but maybe with a little less certainty than I had all those years ago….They are locked into living their way, they demand and expect heat light food and transport to serve their needs, as I do…..but what alternative is there?
Our civilisation is based on a very simple premise: the conversion of explosive force into rotary motion. The “alternative†is that everything moves at the walking pace which was normal until the 1800s
All very well to say “we must do this or thatâ€, but when that “doing†boils down to individuals being forcibly denied access to fuel, or rationed to certain foods, and movement is severely curtailed, then denial will kick in, and violence is certain.
Be in no doubt about that. That is what our future is to be. We have become used to plenty, that era is ending. Will the rich voluntarily reduce themselves to the mean of all of us, or will the “free market†be expected to flourish as usual?
If that is to be, then the rumble of the tumbrils and the descending blade of the guillotine cannot be far behind.
Not that that will affect the ultimate outcome.
the reality is of course that we are scraping the bottom of the oil barrel in order to support 7—ultimately 11 billion– people, on a planet that can support 1 billion at most
Humankind does not take kindly to enforcement, there will always be deniers who raise cries of “hoax†and “conspiracy†for their own ends—even though our downsized future is inevitable . The electioneering of Cruz and Trump confirms this. They exploit the certainty that prosperity and cornucopian plenty are a matter of political choice. (make America great again)
This is why I wrote the book, The End of More,

It is an attempt to hammer home the reality that there really is no more, and that spending money, redirecting wealth, won’t give us any more. 10k years ago, we decided the aboriginal lifestyle was a bad idea and began enclosing land and creating “capitalâ€.
I think we are about to be proved wrong. It is more likely that nature has decided that WE were a bad idea.
We will not go gentle into that good night though".
