abseits vom Maidan liegt.

[...]“Half of these so called ‘candidates’ were handpicked on Bankovaya St. [the location of
the Ukrainian presidential administration] and are supposed to peel votes away from Yushchenko.”

One such candidate, Dmitry Korchinsky, the founder of the extreme nationalist
Ukrainian National Self Defense Army (UNA-UNSO), made it clear that this was
his goal. He arrived to register his candidacy guarded by two armored personnel
carriers, much to the delight of the television crews there to film the event.

“My aim is to take votes away from Viktor Yushchenko,” Korchinsky said on “Prote,”
the talk show he hosts on Ukrainian television. “I am not really hoping to win. But
if Yushchenko wins, it will be a disaster for Ukraine.”

Yushchenko’s campaign managers say that they suspect two other populist politicians
are engaging in the same tactics. Mikhail Brodsky, the head of Yabluko, the Ukrainian
branch of the Russian liberal party Yabloko, and Eduard Kovalenko, the chairman of
UNA-UNSO’s central council, have both been registered as candidates and claim to support
Yushchenko. But their comments, including Kovalenko’s promise to organize a torch-light
march in the center of Kiev with banners bearing anti-Russian and anti-Semitic slogans
,
have done more to hurt the candidate. Yushchenko has filed a court case against Kovalenko.
The other candidate, Brodsky, with his image of a nouveau-riche wearing huge gold chains
and boasting of his capital, is another unwelcome association for Yushchenko
.
